Basically, it's a sign of low IQ-more a definitive diagnostic , really-if a person needs to appeal-to-authority using the smart science man he saw on TV. To this person, smart science man might as well be a wizard, and they invoke smart science man in arguments against people who make them feel threatened intellectually like Yugi busting out the fucking Pharaoh. Take it as a compliment of someone tries this on you; they've categorized you and Smart Science Man as appropriate opponents in their own mind while excluding themselves from that category. Sad, really.
