It's not just a national security issue, because it opens up the important question (if you haven't been paying attention to the last 60 years of US history) of exactly WHO is running our government and HOW they are making their decisions. If a president or congressman is making foreign or domestic policy decisions because they are being BLACKMAILED as opposed to acting ostensibly in the interest of the people who voted for them, that transcends a national security issue and evolves into a full-blown crisis of governmental legitimacy. It's the same principle behind why the CIA killing Kennedy would be so devastating to reveal. It would cause the whole house of cards to collapse, no one would look at Democracy the same way again (and that's a good thing).
