it's definitely a case of appealing to retards with main character syndrome. in the past you had to know how to properly draft and play each stage of the game, and understand how to transition between them. You COULD play assassins, but the difficulty was not in execution so much as knowing how to capitalize on an early 3-4 kills, into ending the game before 35-40 minutes. Tanks were actually super durable but you didn't shit out damage like nowadays, so you were about having continual disruption and providing super powerful auras and effects like aegis, randuins omen, frozen heart, the like. It also allowed some super unique champion designs like denyplank and old urgot, who were pure anti-carries that never scaled well into endgame, but by completely shutting down your enemy laner you'd render them worthless while you were still half a champion.

but now powercurves are so homogenized and every champion and item path has the same general feel. Even slight numbers advantages over your opponent feel more impactful than ever because being 110 vs 100 at all stages of the game means you're ALWAYS behind, whereas before you could be 80 v 100 in the early game but make up for it by being 120 v 100 lategame.
