The original version of the game had Yi as a much more vicious person towards the Sols, because the Chinese are mentally ill and it makes sense to them that Yi would kill all of the Sols as horribly as possible (they are all fighting the Tao which is more than enough justification for basically anything bad that happens to them)
Yi not brutalizing all of his opponents was the result of a rewrite to make the game more morally grey in a deliberate attempt to appeal to Westerners
Goumang is just a holdover from that version of the story, it was likely too complete to just get rid of given that they're an indie studio

T1-5 should be 6 portals
T6-10 should be 3 portals
T11-16 should be 1 portal
Quest bosses should be 6 portals, death resets boss
Real Pinnacles should be 3 portals, death resets boss
I also love one-portal maps as a design decision but one portaling white maps in 0.1 ruined that entire patch for me, it makes atlas progression fucking horribly miserable
