Because Japanese culture is so much cooler than Chinese culture.
And yeah I do know about "hurr durr Chongqing so cool", etc., but most of it's propaganda. It's such a meme that even my mom agrees. I've been to China and much of it's just a facade. Chinese anime is so ass compared to Japanese anime. More tech isn't always a good thing either.
And no amount of "innovation" is ever going to change the fact that China bans almost every website and censors all criticism.
Even among Chinese culture, I have a slight preference for Taiwan over the Mainland. Like Wade-Giles > Pinyin (Pei-ching for Beijing, T'ai-pei for Taibei) and Traditional > Simplified.
