It was a product of its time and by then japanese youth still had hope and it was expected that by that age you were already a productive member of society.

Even after he recovers, I'm not sure the author manged to find an answer for why Satou doesn't just kill himself beyond "its inconvenient" and "death is scary" and the fact there isn't an answer for us either is what makes it truly scary
