All Miyazaki games, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM, is about metaphysical systems based on mythos and fantasy concepts. The characters are there to serve the story, not the other way around. You don't even meet Marika or Miquella until you have to kill them. Marika could be replaced by Godwyn and not much would change because she represents a concept, not a character with actual characterization. This is on purpose, the setting is King, not the characters within
