It raises the defense value in a convoluted damage formula that is close to Damage = Attack - Defense with some modifications, but the actual effect is the same, it still hits dimishing returns as enemy AR surpasses the defense value. Upgradong it just raises the point in which armor becomes less effective, but it still caps and especially fails to scale in NG+
