I don't think you completed the game, first of all. But that's okay. FFXIII has an ensemble cast, that means there are technically 6 main characters in the lead. Lightning is on the cover because of her look, and because she's the first character you play as, was the first to be designed and was the first one to be revealed. But in the actual story events, she's no more of a main character important to events than Vanille, Sazh, Snow, Hope or Fang all are. They are actually very equal.
I think this misconception about Lightning as the MC comes from the reality that because Lighting is on the cover for all three games, people just assume that every single game is entirely about her. When XIII-2 barely features her, and there are long stretches of time in XIII where she isn't on screen.
FFXIII is more about the family dynamic between Vanille/Fang, Sazh/Dajh, Hope/everyone, and Serah/Lightning/Snow. Lightning is just one character.
