Kris "made a deal" with Tenna when they opened the fountain. Kris instructed Tenna to keep Toriel safe, asleep and hidden, and to keep the Three Heroes occupied and entertained for as long as possible. Tenna was promised a reward for his cooperation, but Tenna seems to understand that he's also being threatened/coerced into cooperating.
Tenna understand that Kris is acting on behalf of The Knight. Tenna seems to be under the impression that he's meant to deliver Toriel to The Knight, which is why he's distressed over The Knight taking so long to arrive after he's secured Toriel (this is part of the pun in the name of the Chapter, "Late Night"). Kris, and probably The Knight's, actual goal was stalling while they wait for Undyne to show up so that she could be kidnapped. Tenna was just being used, his fate was written in glass.
Most of this is explained if you visit Tenna in between boards.
