Most of Lovecraft’s work were not Cosmic Horror — they were usually either Weird Fiction (ie, The Shadow Out of Time) or Gothic Horror (ie, The Dreams in the Witch House). His Cosmic Horror came about when he wrote Weird Fiction and focused on the horror element of the strange and unknowns outside of human experience. What I really, REALLY like about his stories is that leaves romance and relationship drama completely out of it them. It’s like, the protagonist’s job is to go and do things he really, really shouldn’t be doing and go mad with fright as a result while stimulating your imagination.

Also, only Lovecraft could get away with such thick purple prose and make it work.

I mean…compare this schlock to Lovecraft, it’s on a different planet.
