Given how the first two films went, he probably would have found a way to make the movie about neither the Aliens nor David.

It would be about herbivorous E.T.-like alien botanists or something and then we'd see David in a post-credit scene doing something contradictory to the lore again and then he'd explain how it really will all make sense in the fourth movie, which would of course never get made.
