Out of all the people who could be the knight, he's the onyl one that makes sense via process of elimination.

Of all these characters, the only one fits the bill and it's Kris. He's the only one who is not viewed as weird slinking around town at night. Asriel would be clocked immediate, Carol is the same she's the mayor, Dess would absolutely be found out since she's been MIA for years.
If you eliminate the possibilities of what cannot be, what's left no matter how insane, must be the truth. And the only person who has all three of these things in spades is Kris, the real one.
I can't think of anyone else who fits the bill perfectly and can also be in these places at the right times.
