You're not seeing HDR, though. You're seeing an approximation made to work in SDR. In real life, the midtones would be of similar brightness to the first frame, but the difference in brightness between the SDR and HDR displays would be compatible to the second or third frames.

Kinda. You need those experimental Vulkan drivers, or the Mesa 25.1 drivers, an HDR-capable display server (Wayland), and an HDR-enabled compositor (Plasma 6.x or GNOME 48 and above). And even then it's only really MPV and video games that have HDR support at the moment.
