So is HDR just brighter than SDR?
Who pays for this shit?

it generally means having more detail in bright areas and dark areas compared to sdr, while having higher max brightness as in the dynamic range is higher

these days you can buy a miniled VA that can do hdr for 300€ so.

HDR is just the marketing term to describe when something has a larger color and luminance range than what you're used to on your standard monitor, allowing you to see more colors and more detail in both highlights and shadows.
A lot of scam monitors and TVs like >>105923486 claim to support HDR (they technically receive the signal and decode it), but their cheap implementations will look worse than regular SDR, which has given HDR a bad reputation

Dynamic range, dingus. It retains the detail in highlights and shadows while it is clipped in SDR.

Every time I see any actually decent comparisons with HDR that show the difference in depth, I just remember that I’m seeing the better “HDR” picture on my current 10 year old non-HDR monitor, and promptly decide to keep it for another 10.

The real problem with HDR is that the current standard is a fucking mess. And yes, most of the time SDR or even HDR that has been tone mapped to SDR is fine.

Does this work on linux already or are we just gonna cope that its just "brighter sdr"?

You can't demonstrate HDR content on a non-HDR screen. HDR looks really nice, especially in games that support natively support it. Sitting in a dark building and seeing the light so bright it hurts your eyes is an experience for sure. OLED + HDR is a nice combo, but it's not for competitive games, as it's kinda disadvantageous, but looks really cool.

With an OLED display, HDR will allow per pixel brightness control. Obviously this can be used for great effects in media.

if the two images look different on my sdr monitor, why do i need hdr?

You're not seeing HDR, though. You're seeing an approximation made to work in SDR. In real life, the midtones would be of similar brightness to the first frame, but the difference in brightness between the SDR and HDR displays would be compatible to the second or third frames.
>>105923697
Kinda. You need those experimental Vulkan drivers, or the Mesa 25.1 drivers, an HDR-capable display server (Wayland), and an HDR-enabled compositor (Plasma 6.x or GNOME 48 and above). And even then it's only really MPV and video games that have HDR support at the moment.

so uh, why can't normal monitors have this exactly? seems like they could just make gamma not effect lighting

Because your standard SDR monitor just uses a basic backlight, set universally for the entire image.

if you tried to make a regular ips monitor display hdr 1400 content then the entire screen would be extremely washed out due to low contrast and no local dimming.

Because it's an animated image, retard.
HDR monitors can see all of the "segments" at the same time, if this was an HDR image.
