I know someone who went to a professional institute to become a comic book pro.
People in the industry are actively discouraged to read or engage in anything that isn't what is selling. You won't be taught shit like what McCloud is talking about, you'll be drilled with art exercises untill you can draw a realistic subject and then you have to choose under what labed draw and adapt your "style" to what they dictate is marketable.
