It did not "lose". It just remains as a niche. By this point many people have a VR device, they just don't use it every day or even every week, but it does get some use every now and then.

What stops it from being more than a niche is a combination of factors:
>VR requires a beefy setup to run the game at very high frame rates
>most people interested in VR are normalfags without a decent PC
>this forces VR companies to include an entire fucking console in the headset
>which makes the headset heavy and prone to heating issues
>and more importantly it makes it so most of the headset's budget is going to the console hardware instead of the display and VR technology itself
>the console can't be too expensive otherwise the headset itself gets too pricy
>because the console sucks, the companies developing games for VR ecosystems can only pump games with shit graphics
>in 2025 games with shit graphics don't do too well unless they are blatant gimmicks like table tennis or VRchat

You know when VR will take off? When Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo start selling a cheap VR headset made only for pairing to the console. Like the PS VR; except that one is a fiasco. The PSVR2 costs $600, is NOT standalone (aka no console included) and somehow it is way worse than the Meta Quest 3 ($500) in the VR display, which is not only cheaper but also includes the console.

When one of the big 3 release a VR display that costs $100, that's when VR will take off.

My favorite analogy is: imagine you go to a live concert. After it ends, you start demanding that they supply you with a CD so that you can listen to the music at home forever.

>but anon we never promised something you could keep forever, we always made it clear that the concert would eventually end
>NOOO MY HECKIN RIGHTERINOS PLEASE SAVE ME EU!
