It is kind of understandable. Medieval missionaries had waves of people following indigenous faiths to convert. You can never really know if they are worshipping something else or if it is just a story they really like. It definitely left a lasting impact both on Christianity and the West in general though. It gets kind of strange when you have people who consider themselves religious mostly focusing on rituals that were only meant to be temporary measures to convert people instead of focusing on faith in general and a true relationship with God. Western culture is like this in many ways due to how militant and competitive it was throughout history through necessity. We are like warriors who no longer have a war.
