What is the point of scalable fonts?
I have yet to see any advantage over bitmap fonts at all. I googled but I only see people saying that bitmap fonts look blurry or pixelated when scaled, but that is exactly what "scalable" fonts are! Bitmap fonts are always crisp and clear, it is scalable fonts that are blurry and ugly. Am I experiencing a different reality or something?

is picrel appearing with the 3D effect for you? trust me I am just as autistic about bitmap fonts as you (I spent over a week hacking my site's CSS for them to look right) and there is no smearing from what I see, I've sized it up 6x here and I tried a paint bucket over it in The GIMP with 0 threshold but couldn't find any blurring. As for other bitmap fonts, there are a few mentioned on the ArchWiki article on fonts in the Bitmap section but I would also recommend this GitHub repository containing a selection of X11 bitmap fonts alongside screenshots of how they look :)
