I argue the opposite; that it fails because it's more difficult than traditional vidya to just pick up and play. VR should be an accessory to or extension of traditional flatscreen gaming and gamepad controls should always be included as an option in VR games for those who prefer it as opposed to being pigeonholed into some special Wii remote wagglefest niche that gets old VERY quickly.

Arcade Time Capsule is my favorite VR game but it's cumbersome having to switch from the Quest waggles to an arcade stick everytime you sit down to play something. Split traditional controls are better but we need some VR standard without the fucking wand garbage.
