Are we against the idea of repeating games we'd covered previously?
I think SMT1 would be a great first game to group play through for this new era. I get the impression the population of the general has changed enough with the onset of recent releases to say the majority probably weren't here when we did those old playthroughs, and I certainly think a decent portion of people in here haven't played anything pre nocturne.
The autist in me thinks we should start with NES MT1 and go through all (translated) titles in release order, but I have a feeling the events would be DOA due to the admittedly lesser star power of pre shin megaten and archaisms of the game. SMT1 being a bit newer, mainline, and even having the updated QOL PSX version makes it a much safer option.

Am I a punk bitch or is SMT1 un fucking bearably boring near the end. I just went through the Cathedral's first nine floors and just learned I have to give away the three cool angels they give you to make some gay ass ring. The encounters don't even really get to me its just the sheer monotony of it. Ginza was bad and TDL was annoying but the Cathedral just blows.
