I've been watching anime long enough where I've seen

and everything and everywhere in between. But I am a little tired of the current thing, where everything has to be round hole square pegged into one or a split cour at most.

You guys know why right? It's always economics and the current economics is that studios, both domestic and foreign, are booked out for a year and a half on average now. But they aren't always booked solid, ie 4 out of the next 6 seasons a studio may be spoken for. So to get all the players to align with everyone's other commitments it's easiest to just try to get everyone together for one cour. This is also the reason split cour is more common these days.
