Fatigue and oversensitivity may be a factor for some people, but the main issue is really HOW it is handled and I disagree that it was "fine in this story". People watch anime with catboys and shit all the time without much fuss, I don't see many people dropping Re:Zero because of Felix for example. It's when you get this Western flavor of "i'd love you even if you presented as a woman" (which actually seems inorganic because Gwen is supposed to be gay but that takes a back seat to an acceptance/ love is love message) that it becomes an issue. It doesn't help that these are side characters distracting from the main plot and romance in scenes that are really not adding anything substantive.

Lazarus had a similar issue when making the tranny and the black guy argue about their victimhood in the most blunt and annoying way possible. Most didn't drop the show when Doug was introduced, they dropped it when he took time to rant about how oppressed he was. This stuff reeks of preachy Western moral influence in the writing and that's what people are actually tired of, not homos generally.
