I firmly believe that BG3 has caused irreparable damage to the entire CRPG genre, and now we face decades of games that will be worse than they could have been. All because of romances. Because the game made good money by attracting coomers, we now have a whole segment of players who think romances are a must in CRPGs.
In reality, most old-school gamers demand the opposite—that games should NOT have romances, as they distract from the core gameplay and consume an excessive amount of resources.
The point is that game development is about resource allocation, and resources are finite. The resources spent on all these romances, their reactivity, and countless variations here and there were NOT spent on other things like side quests, improving the story, or enhancing the quality of existing content.
In other words, for those uninterested in romances, they always detract from the quality and quantity of content because a ton of money and time was spent on them.
Simply put, with limited resources, there’s such a thing as PRIORITIES, and resealable developers ALWAYS prioritize overall content and story quality. Those who make coomerbait spread their resources thin on romances, resulting in both poor romances and subpar non-romance content due to lack of budget and time.
