My stepdad's going downhill fast. He got diagnosed with super-aggressive liver cancer right around Christmas, and they gave him 5 months back then or maybe 5 years with chemo, but the chemo did more harm than good and they stopped pretty quick. He's still alive, but he's not really there anymore. My mom has him in a hospital bed loaded up with opioids in their room, and he just sorta stays in near-perpetual nonsensical delirium except for a few moments of lucidity when he realizes he's at the end of his life and is completely consumed by fear and pain.
I offered to stay with my mom and help out, but she doesn't know whether or not she wants that, and I don't blame her. He is (was) a very proud but also self-conscious guy and he would be mortified by the idea of people seeing him like this. Hell, the first thing he did after he got the prognosis was sign a DNR. I honestly don't know how she's processing it or even if she is actually able to. 7 months ago he was completely asymptomatic and got a chest xray that just by wild chance happened to also show a corner of his liver, now he's literally on his deathbed with full blown dementia. Like what the fuck do you even do for that. She says more than anything she feels angry, and I can totally see why. I don't think any of it's fully registering for me either.
