You can tell that because he's bound and blindfolded on his beach, but also dragged along by the other vengeful mercenaries. The guy grew a backbone and tried to back out, saving the girl he loved in the process. It was pure luck that brought them back together, and she was already in a relationship when that happened -- but she and him shared a bond that transcended Sam's. I feel fucking bad for him more than anything. I identify with not getting to be with the girl that you love, it's someone else's child and you gotta be the one to pick up the broken pieces and help them survive. Neil is literally me.
