The reason it failed is because the premise is fucking overdone and boring

>goes on some adventure, redems themselves in the eyes of their peers/parents

>sappy commentary about "being yourself"
>movie ends with tearjerker scene where the friend has to go away/dies/sacrifices themselves, "we will always be friends", main character redeems themselves in the eyes of parents/peers, make friends at school, happy ending
