Souls that don't bear fruit are sentenced to death and cast into the fire. God created everything for Himself and His glory, and has no use for obstinate creations. It's a warning and a reminder that this is God's universe and that we were created for His purposes, not our own. He wants to love and enjoy you forever. That's why you were made. If you spurn Him, and reject your purpose, you can expect the same fate as the fig tree. To wither and die, having rejected the source of life. Such is the terrifying sovereignty of God.
