I think modern mechanical designers can't see the forest for the trees. Animation and plastic models allow for more detail than ever, which leads to complex and visually appealing designs that fails to capture that same charm that the older stuff did. It's a shift in focus from form to line that becomes apparent when you look at the old classics like the first gundam, zaku, scopedog, or leo. All of these have iconic appearances despite being relatively simple. But if you were to simplify the gqux or gundam ex it would be unrecognizable.
