Neither. Vintage cartoon style incontinuity. The characters are whatever Nintendo needs them to be per game. Take Popeye the sailor for example: Sometimes Popeye and Bluto begin the cartoon as mates, sometime they don't. Sometimes Olive Oyl and Popeye are dating at the start of the cartoon, someone they're not. Their roles shift around to suit the whims of the writers.
For Bananza, someone thought it would be fun to have child Pauline be partner to DK. Likely inspired by Wreck it Ralph. So they made it happen. They're not going to elaborate. They're not going to detail their history. They're not going to provide an ending that resolves the inconsistency with previous games.
You will either accept that the new story doesn't fit the old story, or you will cope by coming up with increasingly autistic fan theories to explain it all.
