That's exactly what it is though. It's a contrived story just to showcase several interesting scifi scenarios and awe the audience with spectacular visuals and sound. Those alone are what made it worth viewing and that is art. Denying that it's one of the best looking movies ever made just because you can say "durrr buh why dey do dat ting?" only makes you look like an imbecile.

That part was pretty weird. And he's mumbling a lot since he's crazy, but he did briefly say he keep taking hypersleep naps to pass the years, eventually thought they weren't coming back but was determined to just stay there. Going to the black hole world first to waste as minimum seven years in the best case scenario was really dumb.
