The reality is that despite the warnings most people seem to not care about the environment, the planet and humanities future. The reality is most people are NPCs and fall hook, line and sinker for the elites right-wing narrative on the environment and climate change even when the contradictions become clear.
Successive governments and organisations have spent the last two decades ignoring these issues and they obviously haven't gone away but have got worse. Here in the south of Britain each summer now is basically a heatwave and has drought warnings and the temperatures are reaching into the high 20s and 30s degrees celsius. The summers are much hotter and drier than they were even in the 2000s and early 2010s. This is the pattern across the rest of Europe and the world, yet despite this the elites, the tory politicians and their media machine still rankle about doing anything, and anyone who suggests doing something is an "eco-zealot" and a "control-freak" communist, yet is due to their likes and their inaction that the action that needs to take place becomes even greater and seemingly radical. You would think with more extreme weather that most would realise and even politicians realise the need to act but apparently not, its just "oh the weather is very hot and it seems to be a pattern, oh well".
Even in non-climate change areas of environmental concern there is a distinctive lack of it from politicians, civil servants, private companies and the general public. Water utilities were privatised several decades ago now as part of the general Thatcherite privatising "leave it to the market" mania and the scandal of the environmental records of these companies has been going on for years. Yet nothing is done and of course the media and the tories are quick to attack if you suggest something should be done. The argument is always the same on all topics "it will cost more, taxes will rise. etc etc" even whilst the country goes to shit.
