The point is people are overthinking it by trying to make FRIEND into more than it is.
Friend is what it says right there in the filename. IMAGE_FRIEND. An imaginary friend. It's a smile in the dark, a friendly face to keep you company.
It was likely created by Dess to cope with her mad loneliness after being in the Dark for years. Her own little friend just there to keep an eye on her.
It being present in all the secret boss stuff is because all that stuff is being set up by Dess while she acts as the Knight. She's aiming for the REAL Freedom after all this shit has messed up her mind. Her FRIENDS just keep an eye on us as we do it for her.

Seam may well have belonged to Dess before. Asriel literally has a drawing of him included in his background

Dess wasn't meant to be the Knight. She was meant to be the "Prince, Alone in Deepest Dark". Prince because she's a tomboy or a "handsome female prince" archetype. Alone in Deepest Dark cause obviously.
Her appearance as the Knight is just because she took the role Kris was supposed to have while Kris took the role the Vessel was supposed to have.
Even her Knight form is a farce: she's actually a mage like Ralsei. It just happens that she uses "sword magic" so she can play the part of the Knight using that.
