The point is people are overthinking it by trying to make FRIEND into more than it is.

Friend is what it says right there in the filename. IMAGE_FRIEND. An imaginary friend. It's a smile in the dark, a friendly face to keep you company.
It was likely created by Dess to cope with her mad loneliness after being in the Dark for years. Her own little friend just there to keep an eye on her.
It being present in all the secret boss stuff is because all that stuff is being set up by Dess while she acts as the Knight. She's aiming for the REAL Freedom after all this shit has messed up her mind. Her FRIENDS just keep an eye on us as we do it for her.

First, let's define the structure of the game:

Seam is the ONLY character in the entire game aside from Gaster who remembers shit between saves. You don't get anything like Undyne having deja vu upon seeing you in Deltarune, because saving and loading is happening on a higher level of reality than anyone else has access to, aside from you and Gaster.
Except Seam somehow REMEMBERS. Seam remembers that you've beaten the secret bosses in previous saves, somehow. This means that Seam ALSO has access to that higher level of reality... except he shouldn't, because his file naming scheme is wrong. In-game assets use standard lowercase naming conventions, but the stuff Gaster made for you all uses capital letters and look like PLACE_CONTACT for a location (in this case the Gonermaker screen itself), PROCESS_LOGO, AUDIO_ANOTHERHIM.ogg etc etc. Everything on Layer 1 uses this naming scheme, everything on layer 2 and below does not.
But there is one entity with Gaster's naming scheme who is also in-universe: IMAGE_FRIEND/DEVICE_FRIEND. Since they come from Layer 1, FRIEND would have access to your save data while also existing in-game. This means that Seam, who has a yellow button eye, will probably open his other to reveal it's pink and show you a wide fuckin' grin because it's been FRIEND wearing the hand puppet the whole time.

Alright, I figured it out: assuming the Roaring Knight is Dess, than the Black Knife was her knife. Asgore doesn't have a piece of it because he fought the Knight or whatever, he had it because it was the only lead he had to figuring out where the fuck Dess went off to. He'll barge into the festival with his schizo conspiracy board and try to redpill Toriel on what he thinks really happened, but then she'll absolutely lose it, letting loose all the anger she's obviously been bubbling up every time they met. Utterly discouraged, Asgore will sulk and go back to his shop, where a Dark World is already lying in wait for him. Kris and Susie will go to check on him, and then that's how they get into the Dark World.

Chapter 3 also connects Kris to cards in other ways, like the "Flying Aces." It seems like they liked card games because they could cheat at them, while we know Noelle has been online from a young age (explains a lot about how she's characterized now), the Spamton Sweepstakes shows that she was already blogging when she was young enough that Dess helped her type her posts.
Tenna obviously had an important place in Kris's house, but it would be hard to actually "play" with the television. There's also a lot of vague metaphorical allusions to how Tenna gradually "won" and made the house his domain as Kris and everyone else grew up and stopped playing pretend so much and spent more time in front of the TV.

According to a map hidden in the Jackenstein fight (with the items and exit from the stage added in) there's seemingly a way to escape the prophecy entirely in chapter 3 somewhere...but since the stage requires you to get the key THEN get to the exit, it'll probably require you to get the shelter passcodes from Kris somehow then swap to Susie in chapter 3 and run into the shelter before Kris can stop you.

"The Knight" is knowledgeable of Dark Worlds and extremely powerful within them. They are not feral. They are, in some sense, a Lightner— Chapter 3's ending and Gerson's testimony seem to confirm this. They're familiar with Kris and, likely, the Shelter code-holders in Hometown. They had some form of access to the Shelter at the end of Chapter 3. They likely collected Undyne for a "police sacrifice." They were strong enough to carry her from Kris' house to the Shelter faster than Susie could run there.
Is "the Knight" one person? A group of people? Do they keep their Dark World appearance in the Light World as the Black Shard from their sword seems to? Do they keep their abilities in the Light World? Is their armor a sort of power suit that anyone can wear? They're implied to be able to remove it in Chapter 4 despite its strange, fluid form.

Toby did not have a rough draft of the ENTIRE script of the game prepared in 2012. Not even close.
Toby had his fever dream showing him "the ending of a game" he became inspired to create in mid-2011. That was only the start of Deltarune's conceptualization, and he took inspiration from many other things he was working on and seeing at the time (Homestuck, Kanotyne's Card Kingdom designs) and in the years since (Undertale).
Toby kept thinking about Deltarune while working on Undertale but work didn't begin on it properly until some time after Undertale's release, and Chapter 1's development only laid the foundation for the rest of the game as Toby realized he was in over his head and if it was just him and Temmie and a few others trying to do this the game would never come out.
The project was basically rebooted (almost literally since they seriously considered switching from GameMaker) when the actual Detlarune development team was brought together, and Toby spent a lot of that time between 2018-2020 working out how the rest of the game would actually go. Even then, we know that some significant changes have happened - we know that Queen was originally going to be a more serious villain before she became more comedic, Spamton NEO was born out of plans for a more proper Mettaton NEO fight that didn't originally involve him, and while Tenna was probably always meant to be some kind of foil to Spamton some aspects of that definitely got played up in light of Spamton's runaway popularity; in particular the entire "Mike" character was seemingly invented in response to fans running away with the idea after Chapter 2.

TL;DR Deltarune has been in development in some form for almost 15 years, it has changed a lot over that time and is still not set in stone even now.
