Yes, we know Kris cares about Susie and Ralsei. But he also cares about the promise infinitely more, which is why he is always, ALWAYS, A L W A Y S doing shit that prevents (You) from getting a real upper hand against The Knight, such as the possibility of defeating them early, learning of their identity, or getting an opportunity to attack when it's JUST Kris in the moment (like the start of Dark Sanctuary, should you survive the gauntlet and reach The Knight.)
Even getting the Black Shard could be seen as a service to the plan (hence why The Knight literally knights Kris, a gesture of respect for being able to pull this off), because it ensures the Fun Gang can overcome Titans as they lead up to whatever the endgame of The Knight is, since they very clearly do not want to bumrush causing The Roaring or they would have done so the moment they started acting on their grand plan.
