In the OP character's case Falcom deliberately even noted their intention to make Adol Christin's design "generic" and not overdesigned; This is in contrast to nearly other Falcom protagonist from the 80s, 90s and 2000s being very distinct.
Adol's a literal self-insert who's only given a distinct personality in anime format (most anime he appears in are satirical and give him a fucking meme personality because he's a blank slate wooden plank otherwise), and ironically the more recent games.
People complain about "self-inserts" in modern JRPG character design (non-descript everyday Japanese dude), but I can't think of a recent, relevant JRPG protagonist who fits that description; That's originally a visual novel trope and we've seen those kinds of protagonists since the fucking 90s.
