Not him but I'll answer it. Holt is extremely gifted, but has had a lot of bad things happen in his life. His older brother, mentally challenged, died. Also lost his love and their unborn child too. Despite everything Holt achieved thanks to his intellect, money and peak physical condition, winning at life, he had nothing of true value and failed the people that mattered most to him. Life simply wasn't "fair", and he contemplated suicide. He was visited by The Spectre, and learned about the golden age Mister Terrific.

In short life isn't always fair, and Holt realized he had the power to set things right
