Yes. That's why silent protagonists fell out of fashion, because devs think the player won't react unless they see the protagonist react. It's literally the video game equivalent of a fucking laugh track. Just compare the scene in Half-Life where Gordon witnesses a soldier executing a scientist, to basically any modern game where the protagonist s constantly pointing out or reacting to things. The former is about the player's reaction, the latter about the character's reaction as it pertains to the story. One is allowing the player to become part of the game, the other is making an interactive movie
