Watch some making of docs from anime studios it's pretty fascinating, animators are often part of a hierarchy where the lead animator only draws keyframes (or the most expressive parts of a keyframe), and desu a lot of the look of modern anime is from post production. At least at ghibli in the early 00s one guy was using software to generate inbetweens, but he was still manually editing most of the interpolated lines.
