Ok heres the deal- on phone so dont mind formatting

On BLM and National Forest land you can generally camp for free up to 2 week in any given spot and as long as you move 1/2 a mile you can restart your 2 weeks...but generally if you keep your site clean and your not doing anything crazy nobody really checks or cares
Look for "free dispersed camping"
Generally there will be worn established sites along a dirt road, no facilities. Sometimes a fire pit or table but usually just a flat patch of dirt....maybe a pit toilet down the road but not generally

I like having a car so I can go into town to gym/shower/Charge my phone and kindle/fill water jugs/ buy food
Planet fitness black card is 25 dollars a month and you can find them everywhere

Ive enjoyed these states most: New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah
this is a good starting point:

I think they have national park annual passes but for the most part national parks will charge you to camp and it will be in a shitty campsite where you can hear your neighbors fart
National forests >>> National parks...for camping at least Natl parks are cool to explore and hike around in maybe camp a night or two for ez access to attractions but Natl forest and BLM land are better for multi day-week stays

This was my favorite spot of all time, it was really pretty and only a 25 minute drive to the planet fitness in flagstaff New Mexico... I stayed here for like a month
Ill stick around if you have more questions
