TFR is one of the "TNO inspired" mods that feel more like TNO rather than vanilla. Kaisrreich for example feels like a vanilla inspired mod. More "free for all", not that much railroading when it comes to wars and political situations, fairly simple looking focuses and focus trees.
TNO is utterly rail-roaded experience with a big focus on the narrative and characters, focuses are "on rails" and have flashy icons.
TFR takes the TNO formula, cuts down on the retarded amount of narrative focus while still keeping some. It also gives you a lot of paths to choose from; for example Russia has three big paths and each of those had like a dozen flavours and subpaths plus two unique paths of you lose the war. Wars are still railroaded and can only really be delayed by going through the whole focus tree or until a failsafe event starts it.
And then TFR came in swinging on the modding scene and absolutely and probably unintentionally raped TNO, giving the utterly demoralized TNO fans(me included) a taste of what could have been had the realism clique not overtaken the mod, although with a different setting thus taking away their player base. Meanwhile TNO dev team was shown to seethe at the way TFR does it's narrative, name called the TFR dev team everything from Trump apologists to Russian propagandists while marinating in the puddle of shit of their own making. Also they have actual competition for the setting now and that probably made them seethe even more.
tldr TFR did made a better TNO style mod than the current TNO.
