In terms of trivia, the films have so much more reach. If you have a trivia question about an evil little girl computer, WAY more people will remember, "Oh, the Red Queen!" than any game-specific reference you care to make. It's really the difference between nerd culture and more casual mainstream audience dynamics.
Most people can't remember the plot of the videogame they just played. Also the fact at best about half of your audience never finishes each game. Game plot comprehension and retention is dismal compared to movies.
Remember how people were disappointed by RE The Final Chapter not properly paying off the awesome ending of Retribution? Well, that's because they actually finished Retribution. Most people who watched it watched to the end. You can't do that with a videogame. Most of your audience will not remember the cliffhanger ending.
Regardless, it's really an issue of demographics. The RE movies have a lot of mainstream penetration. If people know who Milla Jovovich is, they likely know her most famous characters, Leeloo and Alice. When a new RE film is revealed, people are interested to know if Alice is in this one because she is really strongly associated with the brand, much like Ripley and Alien. New RE film protags are automatically compared to Alice. Bryan, the male protag in the new film, is gonna be compared to Alice. She's the reference point.
