For me personally it was as soon as we got a satellite TV box that allowed you to set programmes to record, as well as having a programmable DVR.
I do agree though that, despite the inconvenience, there was a certain charm to having to organise yourself to catch shows broadcast live, watch them at the same time as everybody else, and then talk about them with your friends that day, or on IRC and BBS forums
