>Shutting the game down against the player's will
That's some pussy shit.
GODhou characters can write their own stories regardless of their Author's input.

So true anon.

I however think that beyond what you described there is a fundamental conflict between him being obviously deeply tuned into whatever he channeled Touhou and Gensokyo from, and the culture he grew up in and is surrounded with.

ZUN grew up during the peak of secularization of Japan. He is obviously deeply moved by and fascinated with mythological and spiritual themes, but because of his upbringing and surrounding culture, it manifests in a very tense way. There is a place where forgotten things "pass into fantasy". Gods and spirits are real, but depend on humans to exist. The basis of religion is an absolute fact, but also religion itself sucks and is bad. It's of course this tension that gives Touhou it's shape, form and much energy. But such tension is straining and draining too.

ZUN has been hinting at this, but never fully explicated it because people wouldn't belive him or would ridicule him. He straight up said so in this very drunk stream - the characters and settings appear to him when they want to appear, and are not made up. He wrote something like this in the postcript of Symposium of Post-Mysticism too - being surprised at the historical depth of the characters, "troublesome ones moving on their own".

The one time he has tried to be more sincere about this all, he got crazy backlash. When Children's Parade - Wedding Version got performed and released, the Japanese Touhou fandom hated it. It's beautiful, heartfelt, sincere and full of reverence and gratidute. It's not even explicitly religious or spiritual, simply offerings thanks to "wide and beautiful fantasy" and "stories of men and youkai" that brought him and his wife together.

The moment of him steering toward a darker direction was not his marriage. It was getting such a hateful backlash during a most intimate and sincere moment.

There is a reason why he calls himself kannushi. There is a reason why when he was consulted on the naming of the annual Touhou con, he chose "reitaisai", which are annual festivals at shrines. There is a reason why the most happiest photos of him were from the setsubun where he was dressed like almost like a kannushi, throwing beans. There is a reason why the omikuji book got released and why it has 128 characters.

Touhou's dance of disbelief and belief is beautiful and energetic, but it's born of tremendous internal tension. And this tension is exhausting.

As someone who is obviously very much tapped into something, he also senses things that are not pleasant. It's not all love and light. Our civilizational project has gone to shit, the world is becoming increasingly warped, alienated, hostile and sickly. As someone who has children, he is of course deeply concerned for their future in this kind of world. The "cataclysmic power sleeping under youkai mountain" might be a reflection of some megaquake anxiety, or then some more abstract apocalyptic fear that is becoming increasingly more justified.

Of course this is all tremendously exhausting. It's a miracle he is in as high spirits as he is.
