It's confirmed this is getting a free online release, so new higurashi story by R07 soon.

Basically, there's no guarantee a new Higu sequel will push it again. However, note the big modern sequel without it (the new Rei trilogy) performed badly in Japan -and- had R07 taking the credit of just "supervisor" by the end, saying the basic concept came from Square Enix's editors and he went along with them after they insisted for years. So, he's distance himself from that even more than Gou/Sotsu.
So, we'll see, I guess? Not a big sequel, but he's putting out a short novel about the Higurashi cast writing their own doujinshi. It will be interesting to see what he has for the Satoko/Rika segment...
