It's an abstract kind of hell, but as someone who got tagged as "gifted" as a kid and was at best "the weird smart one" and at worst a social pariah, I'd much rather be unhappy and intelligent than happy and retarded. Realistically life is going to suck either way but at least you can be prepared for the suck.
