Most parents had no idea what they were doing and until the last 30 years it was very limited the damage they could do. A kid in say 1950s - 1980s wasn't going to have the same exposures a kid in say 1990- 2000 was going to have. Video games were rudimentary and very expensive even when compared to now, most schools and programs didn't have the means to watch over the kids and with both parents working "latch key kids" was a thing, your only means to avoid people was books at best, with a little bit of TV in the day and no means to watch whatever you want, when ever you want. So these people that grew up in that became parents and got slammed with very fast moving tech to where video games were cheap and abundant, streaming made watching tv and movies went ever you want a breeze and the Internet's social media created a world where fear grabbed kids could just avoid real people for years on end.

I can't blame or be mad at most of them because they had no clue what was going on and even now I doubt they can understand it.

The problem is more complicated and in a way that we can't solve for.

Women have serious emotional pain when they are paired to a man that isn't seen as high value, we have studies from the 1950s all the way to 2018 that show they have similar emotional reaction to pain in their brains being stuck with what is seen as a low value man as a man would to being alone for the rest of their life, it's also worth noting that women don't even get close to the same values of emotional pain of being alone without a partner like a man would, so out the gate, women suffer less being alone than with a man they don't see as high value. It then leads to the next question: "If this is true, how did everyone get paired off in the last several decades?" and that answer is we master birth control. Before both abortion becoming less taboo and hormonal birth control solutions becoming virtually free to all women, you'll notice that most people(70% or more in the 1930s and 1940s) got married and had a kid less than a few months after the marriage, implying they had a shotgun wedding/oops baby, meaning that most young women fuck those less than top guys and got roped into them young and had to cope with the future it brought, fast forward to the 90s and the shotgun weddings and oops babies become rarer and rarer thanks to the reproductive control we master in about 50 years, and now all these women can just refuse to "settle" and are fine with it because being alone and dead to them is no where near the same pain as a man's, we even see this in the suicidal rates between genders, a 50yo man without wife or kids is nearly 100 times more likely to kill himself in the next 5 years compared to a 50y woman.

so the tldr of all this: they always had these unrealistic standards, it's just nature made sure they still got knocked up, but we defeated nature and get to witness this brave new world.
