The Civil Rights movement was astroturfed by Washington in the 60s to end the most flagrant cases of segregation because they needed to look good in the eyes of the newly independent African nations, that could turn to the soviet sphere of influence if America was so overtly racist, MLK and the likes were only pawns in Washington's game in the context of the Cold War.
