It's pretty obvious at this point that Sonic Team has been desperately trying to appease western journalists and nostalgiafags by constantly borrowing from western canon. Look at the pattern - they've been slowly importing more and more western shit into the games over the years, and it's only getting worse.
Forces was clearly testing the waters with SATAMfag pandering. The whole "resistance vs dictatorship" plot, the furry villages getting destroyed, the "we must fight back against oppression" messaging - that's straight up SATAMcore bullshit. Then you have Prime which literally has a Shatterspace that's just discount SATAM with the freedom fighter knockoffs and the "fighting against tyranny" crap again.
And don't even get me started on IDW being considered "canon" now. That comic is clearly trying to be a spiritual successor to both SATAM and Archie with all the furry villages, the Restoration organization that's basically just the Freedom Fighters with a different name, and Ian Flynn pushing his western interpretations of characters. It's SATAMfag wish fulfillment disguised as official canon.
The gaming journalists eat this shit up because they all grew up on western Sonic media and keep crying about how the games "lost their way" when they stopped being edgy freedom fighter stories. So Sonic Team keeps throwing them bones by importing more western elements to shut them up, even though it goes against what Sonic was originally supposed to be.
They're literally letting Twitter and gaming press dictate the direction of the franchise instead of sticking to the Japanese vision. It's the same reason we got all that meta humor garbage in the 2010s - because western fans and journalists kept memeing about it online. Now they're doing it again but with SATAMfag nostalgia instead.
