Point would be that Dess IS schizoid at this point. She isn't just using Shadow Crystals, she's seemingly made of them.

ERAM being Dess, what she currently has become after going a bit nuts from being alone in the Dark for years, makes perfect sense to me.
I also think she, along with FRIEND (who is based off her old doll Seam) are the ones that set up Jevil, Spamton and Gerson too.
She's playing her role as The Knight alongside Kris in the main route, but this secret side stuff is her fucking with them extremely so they'll get motivated to fight harder for freedom.
Freedom that Dess and FRIEND can't get themselves, but they know the SOUL can if they just make the heroes well equipped enough and the SOUL motivated enough to seek it out.
Yes, she does say awful things to Kris and doesn't seem to care about Weird Route happening. But that could simply be from going mad herself. She's the Flowey of this game basically, all the Dark has made her even willing to torture her family if it means she can get FREEDOM.

Had an interesting thought.
Noelle has a weird interaction coded for the Shadow Mantle. She can't equip it and says
>No... for someone taller.
The no with the ellipses is weirdly specific, like she's saddened by it. And she seems to know someone taller it's meant for.
What if the Shadow Mantle (like, whatever it REALLY is) used to belong to Dess and Noelle in that interaction recognizes it, hence her refusing to wear it?
Seam was the one that had it before it was taken. And Seam may actually have belonged to Dess before being donated to the classroom like Kris' old kid books. So the Shadow Mantle may be something else that Dess used to own as well.
